Having a degree in Animal Science, I decided it would be nice to use the knowledge of Animal Nutrition I gained from my studies and produce treats for dogs that contain only the finest ingredients. I have also worked as an Animal Health Enforcement Officer for the Local Authority which made me more aware of the food I was eating, in particular meat. This made me think that we should be more aware of where all the meat we buy comes from in order to encourage the production of meat from well kept animals. Looking into treats for my dog I found a lack of information on most dog treats about what went into them. I'm well aware of the kind of meat (you don't want to know!) that goes into some pet food or the lack of meat in some cases where they are said to contain meat. So I decided to make my own treats for my dog containing meat that I would see fit for myself to eat and without any added preservatives or colourings. All the Wigtoms treats are made with only British meat classed fit for human consumption and contain 100% natural ingredients.
I also tried a few other recipes for biscuits, such as the peanut butter biscuit and found my dog loved them. I try to make healthy treats for my dog by including things such as herbs, berries and fruits, as these are often missing from the diet of a dog fed standard kibble and tined meat. Believe me, dogs love berries and herbs! We never get to see the cherries on our small cherry tree in the garden as they are within reach of the dog, and we recently found out who had eaten the parsley from the green house- yes the dog!
